Volunteer firefighters
Every year in Russia, thousands of hectares suffer from fires. Peatlands and forests, national parks and residential areas are burning. A thick curtain of poisonous smoke, a thousand-degree flame that destroys everything in its path, black dead earth - this has become a reality for many regions of the country. Peat fires are widespread. Peat burns underground and under snow, tons of water are needed to extinguish it, and when it burns, the toxic substance benzpyrene is released. Volunteers often fight such fires.
This series of photographs covers three years of Volunteer Firemen's work: training and fighting peat fires in different regions of Russia.
The photographs include firefighters from the Russian branch of Greenpeace, Volunteer forest firefighters of the central region and local volunteers.
